Depending the region, some of you may know about a certain syrupy-sweet holiday that is observed on the 3rd Saturday of October. More than likely, you’ve finished your shopping and wrapped a special gift for the one you love. But, then there are those who are wondering—there’s another sugar coated holiday in October other than Halloween? What is this all about, and who celebrates it? No need to fear, because we got the lowdown on the Sweetest Day of the Year.
A Tradition is Born
The holiday we are referring to was first celebrated in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1922 when candy store employee felt that the city’s less fortunate were often being overlooked and neglected. To instill in them a sense of being cared for, he organized the distribution of 20,000 boxes of candy to young orphans, the elderly, and poor people in the city. Other Clevelanders soon followed suit, and thus “Sweetest Day” was born. Imagine that—a holiday designed to sell sweets! But we like candy and all that sweet stuff, so we’ll forgive them.
This tradition now seems to largely involve giving small presents, such as cards, candy and flowers, to family, friends, and lovers. It gives us an opportunity to reach out to the not-so-well-off sections of the society and spread happiness in their lives. Sweetest Day does not pertain to any particular religion, but is based on the broader and all-encompassing principle of humanity.
Widely criticized as just another “Hallmark” holiday, Sweetest Day is now considered one of the most important holidays for retailers in the upper Midwest, and is primarily now a holiday just for men. The idea is for women to give their boyfriends or husbands small gifts to commemorate their love. Commonly “suggested” gifts for Sweetest Day include candy (check), electronics (perhaps) and sex toys (imagine that)!
