Anna Biller calls herself a “nerd who loved watching old movies as a kid.” As an adult, she is channeling a mix of 50s Hitchcock with Douglas Sirk’s lurid lushness and Todd Haynes’s revisionist sexual politics. There is one thing Anna Biller wants to make clear. She is not exploiting the film style of the 1960’s and rejects the comparisons to Russ Meyer’s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Anna Biller is instrumental in creating a new genre of post-modern feminist films. She is, in essence, is the auteur of auteurs.
The Love Witch is shot on a rich, velvety 35mm film. Bright and vibrant, Anna Biller has a brilliant command at creating a consistent tone and texture throughout the film. We are captivated by seeing much of the movie through the lens of a gorgeous, yet evil, female gaze. (Which, by the way, casting is just a small part Biller’s every growing list of talents). Every single person appearing on screen adds to the uneasy tension, giving all of us strange and eerie vibes.
The Plot Thickens
The Love Witch is the perfect blend of intriguing plot and melodramatic dialogue. Anna Biller weaves the web that encapsulates witchcraft fantasy with a delightfully strange script. The main character, Elaine (played by Samantha Robinson) flees San Francisco after her lover dies. Driving a bright-red Ford Mustang, she escapes for a picturesque town in northern California. There’s only one problem. Sweet and demure Elaine can’t help but love men to death. The plot is based on self-help literature which is aimed at women who suffocate men with too much love. The weapon of choice is pure seduction.
